6 Children from Bradford represented the Quest Great Britain Team
which took part in the 11th int children’s championships in Sindelifingen Stuttgart Germany. On the 4-5 of February, And brought back 3 international Gold’s, 1Silver and 2 bronze. For many of them this was there first international
The competition was run under W.T.F Olympic rules as Taekwondo is an Olympic sport and was part of the 2000 / 2004 games,
The competition was massive from previous years as it was open to 7 – 15 years this year not -13 years.
There were five rings and the competition was very hot for the medals as teams from Germany, Korea, American, Spain Russia and many others from around the world competed to win international gold.
On day one Scott Porter, Alex porter and Jacob Barnett competed in the weight classes.
Scott 9years old from Low Ash Primary School beat a French Player in the Quarters and then in his semi it went to 4-4 sudden death. After about a min of play Scott was unlucky to be beat, He took a well dissevered Bronze.
Jacob 10yrs old from Baildon got beat in his quarter finals by a German Player but then took part in the patterns competition and Beat two Koreans to win international gold and beat the founders at there own game.
9years old Alex Brother of Scott and also a student of low ash got through to the final of his weight class. In this match he out classed a Dutch player to win his first international gold medal.
Day 2 started with 8year old Callum Wheeldon from High Crags school beat his first player 6-4 and advancing to the semis. Is this match he just got beat by a Russian player. After being 6-1 down he battled back to 7-5 and just run out of time when he had the Russian on the run.
Up next was Jenna Evans 13years old from Hanson School, what a day this young lady had as her first match went to a 4-4 sudden death with a German Player and after a hard battle she took the match to advance to the semis. There she took on another German and totally out classed the girl winning with-in one minute, then to the final She took on an Italian player and tried her best to win gold but the Italian girl was to quick and beat Jenna 8-5. This was Jenna’s first international so more from this talented girl.
Last match of the day was the best with 11year old Kerrie Spencer from Yorkshire Marters took on a home grown girl and local favourite in the final; this match got the crowd going as they cheered on the girls. After a clash of skill and wills Kerrie’s spirit broke the German girls will and took gold for England.
After a successful two days these results should not be under mined as the emotional strain and physical demands tested these young Olympic hopefuls to the limit.
Trainer and Coach Glen warne said this shows how well and how ambitious the young people and athletes of Bradford are all they talk about is winning and London 2012. At this rate and the hard work there putting in then who knows where they will be in 7 years time when the London Games Start.
